Thanks to the parents for allowing your charges to take part so early on a
Sunday morning, and to those brave and foolish enough to take part
themselves in the fun and games on offer( I hope your private health
insurers agreed to cover any injuries you may have picked up as a result).

Lastly but not least I would like to thank all of the colts who took part
throughout the day. I hope you enjoyed it.

I did,  ( maybe not the individual time trial though , I must remember to
cut the length of the course down next year)

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your Summer.

Finally, please don't forget the colts presentation evening that will take
place on Friday 6th August at the clubhouse. Can I ask you all to arrive
at 6.45pm for a prompt 7pm start ( Food of some description will be

Inside Edge - June Issue

Chairman's Chat

Welcome to all new players to the club, both seniors and colts and their
parents, Old Basing welcomes you all. Good luck to all the new skippers
this season, may all your troubles be purely cricketing  ones.

A few random observations and comments, congratulations to Nick Willcock
on his blistering start to the season, a magnificent match winning League
150  v Langley Manor, one of the great batting knocks of the last 25
years, followed up by a midweek league ton v Kestrel. Well done Robert
Sheldrake and the under 11 squad for starting off their season with 2 home
victories. Congratulations to Ryan Murray on gaining county recognition at
under 13 level, and well done to old GB himself Kevin Oldcorn for showing
there is life amongst the veterans and grizzly old pros of the club with a
first ever League hat trick for the Saturday 2s.

It is wonderful to see in excess of 45 colts each and every Monday evening
but on behalf of Rod and Myself there can never be enough
coaches/assistants to help out.

Finally, 2 things to remember and please refer to the fixture card for
further detail, please please all players and captains remember the
'spirit of cricket'.  Also it is your club and it is the little things
done well that make the club run smoothly, remember if you see a job that
needs doing, don't wait to be asked or leave it to someone else, Just DO
it!!!

Just a cautionary note to all members , adults and colts alike, Old Basing
Cricket Club has zero tolerance on all bullying matters, sadly it appears
to be a society wide problem and is not only to be found in schools. We
pride ourselves on being a friendly cricket club which welcomes all
players from all backgrounds.

In the Nets (A coaching guideline)

Always be Alert in the Field
Every team has good bowlers and batsman that can take wickets and score
runs. However, there's still room for good fielding to win matches.
Walking in, backing up and stay alert are phrases we all
probably hear on the field of play week-in and week-out during a busy
cricket season! But how often do we take them for granted, treating them
more as background noise or a feature of the game rather than serious
positive instructions and actions, come on be honest! Do we actually take
any notice and why should we care? To look good, to please the coach'
NO! The simple fact is that positive actions and good fielding discipline
can win matches! A good fielder will know where to stand on the field of
play having the various positions burned into memory and able to adjust
from one to another instinctively if needed on the skipper's call. By
walking in it's an positive display that they are ready to catch or stop
the ball, an offense tactic to put the batsman under pressure and limit
runs. That said, you could just be forgiven for not stopping a Nick
Willcock missile launched from the bat at Mach 5! There should probably be
a health warning somewhere that reads something like this,Extreme
Caution, may cause injury to the ee-jiot who so chooses to get in the way
of this ball !
Key words in fielding are anticipation and focus; a good fielder will
expect the ball on every delivery. When fielding in close quarter
positions like the slips, it's important to be relaxed and adopt a
balanced solid base with knee's slightly bent to be ready to shift body
weight and rotate on the balls of the feet in a split second. Being in the
right spot at the right time to stop an overthrow (backing up) can reduce
the extras which can tip the balance of a game in favor of the opposition.
By applying these simple things consisently into your game it can make a
significant improvement to your performance and in team results. To the
seasoned cricketer this is perhaps a refresher and to the  Colts, this is
good advice to help you going forward and to enjoy the game more.

In Summary : When in the field stay alert and keep focused, expect the
ball to come your way. These simple things can be the difference between
winning and losing matches either by taking catches or keeping the run
rate down. None of us wants to be remembered for the nutmeg between the
legs or the miss-field that cost the match.
Enjoy the game!

On the Couch( A medical Status of OBCC)

I have only just been able to catch up with the Matron this week to ask
how many patients are still under treatment on the physio's couch. The
answer I received was a bit of a surprise...... Basically the patients
treatment list was empty, all existing injuries had healed. But what she
did say was that on several occassions over the past month several senior
players had approached her for cures to hangovers!
The skipper of the Sat 1st XI also wanted to know if there was a potion
that would cure the curious condition afflicting the members of his team
known as "Dropsyballitus". The matron told him to go and talk to the coach
for an immediate remedy!

Colts Corner

U11's
The editor had a chat to Johnny H the joint head of staff for the U11's
last night as Bootsie is still away on some R&R in Cyprus or was that S&M
I am not sure. I will ask the honourable Vera ( Bootsie's better half) on
their return next week.
Basically the U11's have had a flyer , losing only 1 of their first 6
matches. JH indiacted to me that he is seeing marked improvements in all
aspects of the U11's game and was especially pleased with the batting
performance this week against Yateley. U11 Colts speciffically mentioned
in dispatches: Robert Sheldrake for his batting, Josh Weir for his all
round contributions and enthusiasm in the field, Aiden Day for his batting
, Jade Smith for her batting and fielding and finally Harvey Stuart for
his bowling. But weel done to all who have played so far this season.

U13's

The U13's have only played 2 games to date due to weather postponements
and re-arrangements. We beat Hook in a closely fought match and lost to
Basingstoke in the U13 15/15 cup competition. Generally the team
performances in both these games was a little under par, but I put this
down to early season rustiness due to lack of games. Generally the team
gets better as the season progresses. June sees a busy schedule of 5 games
so lets get at em! on an individual stance, Ryan Murray has represented
Hampshire 3 times in May, and many of the more accomplished U13 players
have turned out for the U15's.

Players mentioned in despatches: Matt Daniells 31* v Hook, Ted MacDougall
22* v Hook. Busy times ahead guys so lets get rocking!

U15's

As with the U13's this team has had limited opportunities to visit the
middle. We lost in a high scoring opening league game at Odiham, beat
Oakley in a friendly and rolled Fleet over last week in the the league.
Generally we have played ok but appear not to be able to do well in all
three core elements at any one time , Batting , Bowling and Fielding, at
best we only seem to fire in one of them in any given game. To be
successful on a continous basis you have to come to the party in two of
them.

Players mentioned in dispatches:

Jordan Mitchell who scored back to back fifties in both league games,  53*
v Odiham and 50* v Fleet. Matt Daniells 24 v Oakley, and Elliot Dedman 28*
against Fleet from only 15 balls faced. Alex Mason took 4-21 against
Fleet, his bro Tom Mason snared 2-2 against Oakley. It has also been good
to see that several of the U15 and U13 colts have started to permeate into
the senior squads during the first month of the season, long may it
continue.

Head Coaches Report for May:

The league teams on Saturday have only lost 1 game between them . The
firsts going down in a close game at Hungerford.
The seconds bolstered by some gnarled old gunslingers aligned to the
introduction of several young guns remain unbeaten.
The Sunday league outfit has flatered to deceive whilst limping to 2
consecutive defeats at Staines and in the cup against Valley End last
week. Our batting let us down in both matches as key batsmen were unable
to keep their wickets intact for very long . The top individual score
being the 44 scored by Johnny H at Staines. Room for improvement chaps.
The Sunday friendly XI under the Bohemiem tutorship of Ali Brown has had a
decent start , losing only to ICL and winning their other games against
Odiham, Ramsdell and Crondall. It is good to see many of our younger
members aiding and abetting Ali every Sunday.
The midweek league team continues to sweep all before them with 3 wins out
of 3 . Most pleasing was this weeks demolition of local rivals Hook ,
Richie Gary is at last realising his potential with a match winning 41 ,
aided and abbetted by Asbo 1 Matt D with 35*

League and Cup  Board of Honours for May:

Nicky Willcock 150* v Langley Manor HLC2
Dan Belcher 113*    v Hungerford    HLC2

Other League Batting Contributions( 50 or over)
Ian Crossley 69* v Steep NE2

for a hot and sunny June)

Inside Edge Issue 1: MAY 2010

Captain’s Log : From Newly elected Club Captain Nick Cooper.
With the dawn of a new league season almost upon us, Coach
has asked me to put a few words together. He called it a
‘captains log’ (yes, I smiled at this too) and hopefully
this will be ongoing throughout the season.

Firstly, I would like to thank Johnny H for all his hard
work, commitment and enthusiasm. We all owe him a great
sense of gratitude for the success he brought to the club
whilst he was captain and I know I have big shoes to fill.

Whilst we maybe a smaller club than our local rivals (no names!),
in the 3 years I have been playing for OBCC there
is no doubt in my mind that we have more heart and passion
where everyone has a real sense of pride to be part of the
club. We have an excellent colt set up that will no doubt
bode well now and for the future, plus with us now playing
Sunday league cricket I’m hoping that this will also help
continue raise our profile within the area.

Finally, we play the game of cricket for many reasons but we
all have a shared love of the game, we are all aware of ‘the
spirit of the game’ and whilst I want us to be as
competitive as ever this year (I want us to win every game
we play!) we should never forget that cricket is bigger than
all of us and we have a responsibility to our team mates,
colts and to all those associated with this great club to
uphold this during the course of the summer.
To everybody -let’s enjoy the season, play the best standard
of cricket we can and create some lifelong memories along
the way!
Coops   (Club Captain)

In the Nets:  A few tips from the Coach (Oh really I here
you say)
Here are some good habits and mind sets to adopt when
analysing your batting style and approach.  Be you a colt,
league player or just a playing for fun sort of guy.
A.B.C, where A stands for “Alignment”, B stands for “Base”
and C stands for “Completion”
Alignment: Getting your head /eyes and general body into a
position to play an effective shot in relation to the ball
being bowled.
Base: Getting your body shape into a solid base position to
enable the correct shot to be played.
Completion:  Maintain your alignment and base which should
allow you to complete your shot risk free and efficiently.
Enabling you to protect your wicket but more importantly
score runs for your team.

Alternatively you could also adopt the following concept
which is very similar to A.B.C being:
B.B.C, where B stands for “Base”, B stands for “Balance” and
C stands for “Control”
Base: Getting your body shape into a solid base position to
enable the correct shot to be played.
Balance: Getting your body well balanced to negate any
“flying” body elements such as elbows and arms, head
position, misalignment of hips and shoulders, all of these
faults will not allow you to complete the shot…..under…..
Control: Generally to perform an efficient and low risk shot
you will need to be in control through each element of the
shot selection (mental) and completion (physical).
As an observation you just need to look at two current
England batsmen with totally contrasting styles and approach
to batting.
Ian Bell: Probably the most traditionally correct batsmen in
the current England set up
And:
Eion Morgan: Critically acclaimed as the most innovative
batsman in the current England set up.
Both are effective in scoring runs and protecting their
wicket in the different forms of cricket that they play. But
if you were to analyse both in detail, most elements of
their batting style and skills utilise either or both of the
A.B.C or B.B.C concepts.

On the Couch: The current injury list of Basing Senior and
Colts players. (1= Long term, 2= Temporary, 3= Big Wuse)
Jonty Smith (1): Badly dislocated digit on his right hand,
off work for 4 weeks (how much did you pay your doctor)?
Jonty’s estimated time on the physio couch 3-4 weeks.

Matt Smith (2): Sliced open his palm making a tremendous
stop on the boundary v Odiham.

Dan Belcher (3):  Damaged his groin poor lad, not sure how
this was done but Taunton and rutting are words that come to
mind! A full fitness test will be required before his next
outing.
Estimated time on the physio couch, no time required.

Elliot Dedman (2): Tweeked his hammy running a quick single
against Odiham. Elliot’s estimated time on the physio couch,
probably 1 week.

Nicky Willcock (2): Turned his ankle over when he was taken
out in a community (friendly!)  6 a side football
tournament.   Nick will be unable to bowl for 2-3 weeks.

Greg Donaldson (3): Suspected over extension of shoulder
joint, cause unknown but answers on a post card please,
alleged over zealous use of Alice band being chief cause of
injury.
Greg will be unable to bowl for 2-3 weeks and will have to
field in the slips.

Curtis Ahearne (1): Suspected broken collar bone caused by a
football injury. How unlucky is that!
2-3 weeks out for Curtis.

At the Crease:   A humorous review of the winter of
2009/2010 (to summarise, it were bloody cold and bloody
long!).  What a miserable winter it was too, over and above
the weather which was the coldest on record, stretching back
nearly as long as the last major success of our chairman’s
beloved football team, Sunderland.

Can anybody tell me what is good about January and February,
absolutely nothing! other than Valentine and Pancake Days.
March comes up only slightly better with Mothers and Paddys
Days. Now April gave us Easter and best of all my Birthday,
it also saw the end of the well attended indoor net
sessions; the coach is a little worried about the fitness
levels of some of our young gun superstars.  There is also
concern in the camp and of our insurers about the noticeable
girth expansions of some of our elder statesmen over the
winter months, some amounting to “Colin Milburn” like waist
measurements!

The indoor league competitions at Dummer brought mixed
results with the Colts U13 team winning their league for the
second season running. The U15’s had a dreadful start but
won 4 of their last 6 games and tying another. The young
senior side performed well in the Hook dominated North Hants
league finishing 4th. The second string wallowed in the
bottom half of the second division.

Congratulations to Ryan Murray who broke into the Hampshire
U13 squad, Nathan Maggs who made the North District winter
training squads as did Monty Smith and his sister Jade
Smith.

April has been designated to the history bin and May is upon
us.  Elongated negotiations have taken place with wives ,
loved ones and girlfriends in respect of  delaying holidays
and visits to long lost unloved relatives.  All weekend
shopping should have been suspended until September.

Our chairman is very pleased to announce that there were no
“Red Top” press scandals generating from our stable of young
guns, akin to those that came from some of our better known
national football stars John Terry, Ashley Cole or Ledley
King.
None of our fading middle aged members appeared in
“strictly”,I can’t Cook for toffee,  or I am an old git “get
me out of here” TV programs or any of the reality dross that
was served up during the winter months. There was a rumour ,
unconfirmed that Village and Richie Dane were auditioned for
BB 69, but were rejected on the grounds that they were too
straight and normal!

As Bumble would say “Start the Car” summer is here.

The Inside Edge : OBCC Cricket Magazine : An Introduction

This is the first walk to the wicket of a new monthly feature to be issued
on our fantastic website . The first important news is that we have a new
webmistress to be known only as " Buckets" to protect his identity.

The Monthly ramblings of the coach and many other active club members (hopefully) will have some new headline subjects:

At the crease: An irreverent, humerous and retrospective view of play
from the previous month's senior club matches. Individual match stats and
reports will be posted on the Averages and results page of the website.

Colts Corner: News and views from our thriving Colts section.

Players of the Month Award: Self explanatory.....

In the Nets (Coaching Tips): Sooth sayings from the coaches crystal ball.

View from the Boundary: A preview of the next month's matches with
predictions and thoughts

On the Physio's Couch: Who is on the crocks list and the causes of their
ailments.

Captains Log: A few wise words from our new Captains forum

The 12th Man: Articles written by guest scribes.

In the Pavillion: A social section on what is going on in the club.

Obviously not all of the above headliners will appear every month ,but I
hope to get good coverage of each one as the season progresses.

The first edition of the " Inside Edge"  is just being proof read as we
speak and will be in circulation by this weekend.

One legal matter to clear up first....... All that is written in this
magazine during the season has to be accepted as purely fictional and will
bear no relationship to real life or more importantly to any real people.
Therefore there is no recourse for any legal processes being made against
any of the authors of articles presented in this magazine.

Ryan Murray: Selected for Hampshire 2010 U13 Squad

Great news for Ryan the club and his parents.

Ryan has been informed today that he has been included in the squad for
this Summer's competition. A remarkable achievement considering he has
only had 2 seasons of playing the game.

Well done Ryan.

Commiserations to his no doubt proud parents Trev and Carol, who will now
have to ferry him across the breadth and depth of the Country in following
their son's progress during the summer.

Taxi for Ryan ......Trevor!

Ryan,  I wish you every success , One piece of advice, just really enjoy
the experience and make the most of this opportunity afforded to you to
learn more about this game of cricket.

I, and the club will give you all the support and advice you need .

Well Done Nicky Willcock

Nick, his Grandad , Becky , Coach and Heather attended the annual Hampshire League award dinner in November .
Nicky picked up the batting award for County 2 ... 806 runs at an average of 60 odd.

The story to tell is that the Pywell Park batsman who was 170 runs ahead going into the last match already had a place in the club's trophy cabinet reserved for the trophy !!

Well done Nick for what was truely an awesome knock , it was a a proud Dad and coach that watched it that day way back in August.

1st Team squad Performances:

Captain Middle Order Batsman : John Huntingdon (aka P.I.E Chucker)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 0 (The threat was always there see above)
Bowling Average: n/a
Best Bowling: 0-10
Catches: 5
Total Runs: 71
Highest Score: 16
Batting Average: 11.8

Top Trumps Performance rating: 6/10

Winner this year of the:” B.N.B” trophy (B.N.B stands for Bloody Nice Bloke)

General Comments:
The Skip improved tactically as a captain during his last season in charge. He did not score the runs of previous seasons as he generally batted himself down the order. But he used his cool head on a couple of occasions to close out games when wickets were falling all around him.

Opening Batsman and Left Arm Spinner: Nick Cooper (aka Coops)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 3
Wickets: 21
Best Bowling: 5-29
Bowling Average: 18.9
Catches: 6
Total Runs: 419
Highest Score: 66
Batting Average: 29.9

Top Trumps Performance rating: 8/10

Winner of the First XI: ” Player of the Year” trophy

General Comments:
Coops scored some useful runs at the top of the order and also gave the team an added dimension with his nagging left arm spin bowling. An expert slip fielder( nearly)
Coops was hero and Man of the Match in the Guy Jewell cup final. He still needs to work harder on his general fitness levels during the close season.

Opening Batsman and Opening Bowler: Dan Belcher (aka The Belch or Daniel)

Hundreds: 1
Fifties: 1
Wickets: 18
Best Bowling: 5-26
Bowling Average: 16.5
Catches: 11
Total Runs: 279
Highest Score: 111*
Batting Average: 25.4

Top Trumps Performance rating: 6/10

Winner of the” Biggest Strop of the Season” award for his performance at, and a long time after the Pyewell Park match( about 6 weeks in all)

General Comments:
Dan had a disappointing season with the bat, falling well below his record breaking season of 2008.  His fielding was dynamic and he pouched 11 catches during the league season. His return of 18 wickets with his fast swing bowling was to prove a useful weapon in the teams’ bowling armoury. His best bowling coming at Cadnam where he decimated the home innings with a 4 wicket opening burst.

Middle Order Batsman and Keeper: Paul Eckersley (aka Peter or Buckets)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 0
Best Bowling: n/a
Bowling Average: n/a
Catches: 6  Stumpings: 0
Total Runs: 234
Highest Score: 45
Batting Average: 23.4

Top Trumps Performance rating: 7/10

Winner of the “Most Ducks” award for 2009

General Comments:
Paul proved to be a very useful bits and pieces player during the season. His fielding and catching were exceptional. He proved to be a first class wicket keeper when offered the gloves. In his role as middle order batsmen he was able to see the team through to some well earned victories. The batting highlights being 45 runs against Hamble and 40 runs against Burridge.

Fledgling Opening/Lower Order Batsman and Ex Keeper: Andy Pope (aka Popey)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 1
Wickets: 0
Best Bowling: n/a
Bowling Average: n/a
Catches: 6  Stumpings: 0
Total Runs: 183
Highest Score: 67
Batting Average: 16.6

Top Trumps Performance rating: 5/10

The Winner of trophy for the “W.A.G with the most manic laugh” award.

General Comments:
Popey started the season as first choice wicket keeper, but to be honest had a bit of a nightmare culminating at Shrewton.  His batting never really took off until he was offered the opening spot by the skipper in August. He scored his maiden 1st team 50 in his first innings at US Portsmouth. He does need to develop his vocal range and variety of motivating statements during the close season as he is seen as the teams’ motivator in the field.

Lower Order Batsman and Keeper: Max Elward (aka Maximilian)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 0
Best Bowling: 0-21
Bowling Average: n/a
Catches: 5 Stumpings: 2
Total Runs: 24
Highest Score: 12
Batting Average: 12.0

Top Trumps Performance rating: 6/10

Winner of the Colt who has the most “Yummy Mummy “award

1st team debutant

General Comments:
Max is one for the future, he is an excellent young keeper who when given the gloves did not let the team down. He has natural hands and took some stunning catches behind the stumps. His batting opportunities were limited but he shows exceptional promise in this area if he can overcome his lack of self confidence. He is also an excellent fielder and can bowl medium pace when required.

Top Order Batsman and Change Medium Pace Bowler: Nick Willcock (aka Noo Noo or Coxy Jnr)

Hundreds: 2 (1 double hundred)
Fifties: 4
Wickets: 11
Best Bowling: 4-29
Bowling Average: 15.2
Catches: 5
Total Runs: 806
Highest Score: 220*
Batting Average: 62.0

Top Trumps Performance rating: 9/10 (MAN OF THE SEASON)

Winner of the Club “League Batting” award, in doing so setting a new club batting record for a single innings of 220*

General Comments:
Nicky had another fantastic season with his hard hitting and aggressive style of batting, once he got set no bowler was safe as he found the boundaries with ease through all areas of the field of play. He scored 3 fifties on the trot early season. Culminating with a big ton , 133 against Hamble.
After a mid season lull he finished the season strongly with 71 at US Portsmouth and a club record breaking 220* v Purbrook in the last match of the season, taking the club batting trophy away from his brother Richie in the process. His fielding was sharp and of a consistent high quality through out the league campaign. He was asked to take over bowling duties from the injured Darren Turner towards the end of the season. His medium pace swing bowling returning 11 wickets with a best of 4-29 against Burridge. His league run tally of 806 must give him a good chance of winning a medal at the end of season league awards evening. More of the same next year Nicks. Good luck with your future fatherhood (Ethan Charles Alan Willcock who arrived on 09/09/2009)

Top Order Batsman and Off Spin Bowler: Richie Willcock (aka Coxy Snr)

Hundreds: 1
Fifties: 2
Wickets: 11
Best Bowling: 4-47
Bowling Average: 35.7
Catches: 8
Total Runs: 639
Highest Score: 180
Batting Average: 49.2

Top Trumps Performance rating: 8/10

Winner of the Club “League Fielding “ award
Also for some obscure reason being mistaken by several teams as our “Overseas Player” but we all know that is our very own Dev Vyas!

General Comments:
Richie had a second high class season with his cultured classical style of batting, once he got set like his younger bro Nick , no bowler was safe as he found the boundaries with ease , especially through the mid wicket region. He scored 2 fifties during the season his highlight being a big ton, 180 against Hythe and Dibden .
He finished the season strongly with 83 at Purbrook in an opening stand of 260 with his younger brother Nicky.
Richie’s fielding was outstanding and of a consistent high quality through out the league campaign and was peppered with a series of high quality stunning catches and direct hit run outs. His bowling never really reached the levels attained during the previous two league campaigns , his haul of just 11 wickets did not really do him justice , as for long periods in matches his style of off spin bowling tied the opposition batsmen in knots.

Richie, good luck in what ever you decide to do and wherever you decide to ply your undoubted all round cricketing skills next season.

Bowler: Dev Vyas (aka Arkwright)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 15
Best Bowling: 3-24
Bowling Average: 27.7
Catches: 0
Total Runs: 21
Highest Score: 8
Batting Average: 10.5

Top Trumps Performance rating: 6/10

Winner of the Tesco’s Trophy for the “Most dedicated Provision of Teas” award 2009

General Comments:
A steady season for “Arkwright “with the ball. Dev still managed to confuse many opposition batsmen who thought he was a spinner. He did managed 3 returns of “3 for” and continued to be very tight regarding the amount of runs he conceded throughout the season. He was a hero with the bat in the tight game against New Milton where his 4 off the penultimate ball ensured we won that match.

Middle Order Batsman and Opening Bowler: Matt Donaldson (aka Senior ASBO)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 1
Wickets: 15
Best Bowling: 3-35
Bowling Average: 16.3
Catches: 2 (Both were off his own bowling I think)!
Total Runs: 123
Highest Score: 50
Batting Average: 17.6

Top Trumps Performance rating: 7/10

Winner of the Captains Cup for the “Most improved Player”

1st team debutant

General Comments:
Matt took a while to settle down and understand his role in the team during the season.  His swing bowling developed and he became arguably the quickest bowler for or against any opposition that  we played. He put together some very useful innings coming in with 10-15 overs left, scoring at nearly a 120% strike rate, in doing so elevating the Basing scores well into the 200 range. He must improve on his fielding as basically he could not even catch the much reported “swine flu” during the season.

Lower Order Batsman and Off Spin Bowler: Greg Donaldson (aka Junior ASBO)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 12
Best Bowling: 4-41
Bowling Average: 15.5
Catches: 3
Total Runs: 27
Highest Score: 15
Batting Average: 6.8

Top Trumps Performance rating: 6/10

Winner of the Pooftas Medal for the “Most Gay Man bag” seen at the club.

1st team debutant

General Comments:
Greg who was an U15 colt only played a few games during the season. His spin bowling accounted for 12 wickets as he utilised changes in pace and angle of delivery to snare some important early wickets during the early part of the season . He returned to the 2nd XI towards the end of the season and scored some useful runs. Like his elder ASBO brother he is one for the future over the next 3-5 seasons.

Middle Order Batsman and Opening Bowler: Darren Turner (aka The Dazzler)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 6
Best Bowling: 2-39
Bowling Average: 42.2
Catches: 7
Total Runs: 177
Highest Score: 28
Batting Average: 14.8

Top Trumps Performance rating: 5/10

Winner of the Delia Smith nutrition certificate for the “Most weird eating habit” award

General Comments:
A very disappointing season for the “Dazzler” as a ankle and foot  injury mid season meant that he was unable to bowl during the last 8 games. He has an astute tactical brain but was unable to score the runs expected of him when given the opportunity in the middle order. His fielding was of a high standard and he took some stunning catches, none better than the fantastic 1 hand parry and catch on the boundary in the Guy Jewell cup semi final victory over Hook.

Middle Order Batsman: Ian Crossley (aka The Gorilla or Senior Pro)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 0
Best Bowling: n/a
Bowling Average: n/a
Catches: 3
Total Runs: 58
Highest Score: 26
Batting Average: 29.0

Top Trumps Performance rating: 6/10

Winner of the 2009 IMack Hirsute medal for displaying the “Most Body Hair” in the shower throughout the season.

General Comments:
A stunted season for the senior pro as a nasty finger break early season meant that he only played in a handful of matches. The senior pro never really had the opportunity to show his undoubted class with the bat.  Ian still remains a useful tactical wing man to the skipper and on occasions took the role of the aggressive fielder when trying to disrupt and get into the faces of the opposition batsmen.

Top Order Batsman: Keith Timms (aka Timmsey)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 0
Best Bowling: n/a
Bowling Average: n/a
Catches: 0
Total Runs: 74
Highest Score: 44
Batting Average: 29.0

Top Trumps Performance rating: 4/10

Winner of the “Lord Lucan” award for his unavailability for the 1st XI throughout the season

General Comments:
Timmsey was a squad player during the 2009 season, he nearly or if I were to be over critical should have won us the game against Ropley. His fielding especially in the gully was a sight to see, as very few balls got past him in this area.

Bowler: Angus Stronach (aka Gussy)

Hundreds: 0
Fifties: 0
Wickets: 0
Best Bowling: 1-19
Bowling Average: 37.7
Catches: 0
Total Runs: 16
Highest Score: 14
Batting Average: 5.3

Top Trumps Performance rating: 4/10

Winner of nothing really!

General Comments:
Gussy only played a few games mid season for the 1st XI, spending most of his time either injured with a broken thumb or plying his trade for the 2nds.

On Reflection

If only ……………………….. 7 points or 0.38 average points away from success in the league, we will have to get over it and gain promotion to County 1 next season!

We were successful though in winning the Guy Jewel cup on a balmy evening in late August against Hartley Wintney in what transpired to be a last ball nail biting thriller.  Man of the Match Nick Cooper hitting the winning run from the last legal ball after we were set 19 runs to win from the last over.

Exploits from which dreams are made of and legends crafted, embellished and told to our grandchildren once we all get older and give up playing the game. These are memories that cannot be taken away from those that participated and watched.

But boy did it feel good to beat our arch rivals Hook in the semi final. To be honest and without doubt that to a man the Basing boys classed this as their final.

Another season is now cast into the memory banks, our kit is washed for the final time and bags dispatched to the loft or garage.  But somewhere the countdown begins to the start of the next season and the many unknown challenges that await the Basing Boys.

Last thought before I sign off ………………. ENGLAND WON THE ASHES!

So, see you all next season for another rollercoaster ride of fun, antics, laughter and successes.

A Timeline Review of the 2009 Season

Where to begin? Well like any good story, at the beginning of course!

May 2009(We started well, but then suffered a 3 game losing streak which in retrospect cost us dearly in the end,  as we languish near the bottom of the table going into June)!

Match 1 v Hungerford (Home)

Match Result: Hungerford 112 all out, OB 113-4: OB won by 6 wickets

Notable performances and observations:
A strong start to the season for Basing as the Hungerford batsmen were blown away by the bowling of Dan Belcher (9-2-15-4).
Paul Eckersley (30) topped scored as the Basing Batsmen reached the small total of 112 in 31 overs.

Match 2 v Langley Manor (Away)

Match Result: Langley Manor 214-9, OB 210 all out: OB Lost by 1 wicket

Notable performances and observations:
This was a match in which we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, having been on top for most of the game. Langley were let off the hook on more than 1 occasion as when we batted we lost our last 6 wickets for 40 runs and only reached 210.
Langley were also struggling at 83-5 but ultimately managed to win off the last ball after a very dubious umpiring call on the penultimate ball of the match. We compounded the agony by dropping at least 3 catchable chances as well. Nick Cooper (66) and Nick Willcock (40) were the most successful Basing batsmen . Dev Vyas ( 3-35) was the pick of the bowlers.

Match 3 v Ellingham (Home)

Match Result: Ellingham 223-5(promoted) , OB:177 all out  OB Lost by  runs

Notable performances and observations:
The Basing batting collapsed with 10 wickets falling for only 53 runs after an opening stand of 124 between Nick Cooper(62) and Dan Belcher (50).  Ellingham had set a competitive target of 223 with Richie Willcock (2-29) the best of the bowlers. This defeat following closely after the defeat at Langley was a bitter pill to swallow for the Basing boys.

Match 4 v Pylewell Park (Away)

Match Result: Old Basing all out, Pylewell Park: OB Lost by 7 wkts

Notable performances and observations:
This was our only real drubbing of the season as our batting failed dismally. Defending a small target the bowlers also were decidedly off colour as well. Nicky Willcock (53) looked like he was going to return a good score before he was run out by his brother. It was all down hill after that as the Pyewell Park openers put on 134 for the first wicket strolled past Basing’s total.

June 2009: (We managed to get back on Track and moved away from the arse end of the table into a mid table comfort zone)!

Match 5 v Basingstoke (Away)

Match Result: Basingstoke 197-5(relegated) , OB 201-7: OB won by 3 wickets

Notable performances and observations:
With several of the players otherwise engaged at Paul and Julie Eckersley wedding a depleted Basing team managed to start the rot for Basingstoke who ultimately were relegated at the end of the season. It is a fact that Basing never seem to lose to Basingstoke at Castle Field. In a disciplined bowling display Basing restricted the home club to 197.  Nicky Willcock (93*) and his brother Richie Willcock (41) were the main contributors in a narrow win.

Match 6 v Hythe and Dibden (Home)

Match Result: Hythe and Dibden 239-7 , OB 325-5: OB won by 96 runs

Notable performances and observations:
Basing scored a massive 325 runs on a sunny day against Hythe and Dibden. The star of the show was Richie Willcock(180*) with a fantastic batting display. He was assisted by Nicky Willcock ( 51) in a stand of 115 for the 3rd wicket . Hythe were difficult to budge as their batsmen scored 239-7 with Greg Donaldson (4-41) causing them the most problems.

Match 7 v Ropley  (Away)

Match Result: Ropley 189-7, OB 184 all out: OB Lost by 5 runs

Notable performances and observations:
A match that we lost, won, lost, won and ultimately lost as a result of an in disciplined and poor batting performance. Chasing a target of 189 most batsmen got themselves set but then gave their wickets away.. Keith Timms(44) and Richie Willcock(35) were the highest scorers. Matt Donaldson (3-35) starred with the ball. An 8th wicket stand of 43 from the ASBO brothers Matt Donaldson(20) and Greg Donaldson(15) nearly gave us the win with only 6 runs required from the last over , being an “over too far”.

At this point Basing had won 3 and Lost 4 matches, time to change.

Match 8 v Hamble (Home)

Match Result: Hamble 109 all out(Relegated), OB 320 – 7: OB won by 211 runs

Notable performances and observations:
Some power batting by Nick Willcock(133) saw Basing to their 2nd  300 + score of the season. Nick Cooper(61) and Paul Eckersley(45) put on 118 runs for the first wicket. Nick Willcock and Richie Willcock(46) then proceeded to put on 176 runs for the 3rd wicket.  The slow left arm spin of Nick Cooper(5-34) soon dispatched a poor Hamble batting line up.

July 2009: (Now we are rocking as we hit the top quarter of the table but we had a scare against New Milton early doors)!

Match 9 v New Milton   (Home)

Match Result: New Milton 196-6, OB 198 – 9: OB won by 1 wicket

Notable performances and observations:
This was a close one as the Basing bowling and fielding unit had a rare bad day as they allowed Milton 30 runs more than they deserved, Greg Donaldson (2-37) was the best of a bad bunch. Nick Cooper( 44) and Richie Willcock(43) were the only batsmen who got going in a 2nd wicket stand of 58. Wickets fell regularly and with 1 over remaining and 1 wicket left needing 5 runs, Dev Vyas smashed the penultimate ball to the boundary for a close win. The Coach was nervously watching from the action from the non striking end!

Match 10 v Shrewton    (Away)

Match Result: Shrewton 326-6( Champions) , OB 74-1 Abandoned Rain

Notable performances and observations:
The general view was that we were saved by the rain . Another poor bowling and fielding performance in wet conditions allowed Shrewton to cruise to 326-6 after the loss of 2 quick wickets. Dan Belcher (2-27) was the pick of the bowlers. When the rains finally caused the match to be called off Basing had just started to pick up the run rate . Nick Cooper(26*) and Nick Willcock(38*) were the damp batdmen at the end.

Match 11 v Lymington     (Home)

Match Result: Lymington 203-5 , OB 145-7 won by 3 wkts ( rain affected score)

Notable performances and observations:
Matt Donaldson with (3-36) and a quickfire (30) was the deserved man of the match in this rain affected game. Basing were 3-2 after the first over when rain stopped play for an hour. On resumption another 143 was needed for victory. A stand of 45 between Paul Eckersley ( 25) and Andy Pope (27) set up the win .

Match 12 v Cadnam     (Away)

Match Result: Cadnam 171-7 , OB 174-7 won by 3 wkts

Notable performances and observations:
An opening spell of 4 wickets by Danny Belcher ( 5-26) demolished the Cadnam top order to 28-5. From here they recovered to end their innings at 171-7. Again a good 3rd wicket stand of 70 between Richie Willcock(63*) and Nicky Willcock(35) set up the win for Basing as the winning runs were scored in the 38th over.

August 2009: (We are just unstoppable bring on all comers, promotion is within our reach, but we just fail after winning 11 out of our last 12 matches)!

Match 13 v East Tytherley    (Home )

Match Result: East Tytherley 111 all out  , OB 157-9 won by 46 runs

Notable performances and observations:
Against a team who had followed us up the leagues in the last two years, but who we did not play due to rain in both seasons. This time play did commence again in very damp conditions. Basing struggled to reach a score of 157-9, the main contributors being Richie Willcock(37) and Darren Turner (26) . Tytherley chasing an adjusted target of 146 capitulated to the spin of Nick Cooper(3-20) and the pace of Nick Willcock(2-19) and only registered 111 all out. During this match Richie Willcock took 3 stunning catches and dropped 2 more!

Match 14 v Burridge    (Home )

Match Result: Burridge 107 all out (Promoted), OB 190-7 won by 83 runs

Notable performances and observations:
Basing struggled to gain a total of 190-7 with Paul Eckersley (40) and Ian Crossley (26) providing an end of innings surge. Burridge really were poor as Nick Willcock (4-29) ripped through their top order.  It beggars belief as to how Burridge sneaked into a promotion spot at the end of the season as they appeared to be the worst batting team to have visited the rec.

Match 15 v US Portsmouth     (Away)

Match Result: US Portsmouth (Relegated) 106 all out, OB 292-6 won by 186 runs.

Notable performances and observations:
The Basing batsmen ( apart from Nick Cooper that is) really made hay down on the south coast against a very poor Pompey outfit. Virgin opener Andy Pope( 67) was in a 3rd wicket stand of 146 with Nicky Willcock(71). Matt Donaldson(50) scoring his maiden half century and Paul Eckersley (41) put on 83 for the 6th wicket as Basing surged to a total of 292-6. The Portsmouth batsmen were no match for Dev Vyas(3-28)  and Nicky Willcock(3-26) and struggled to reach 106.

Match 16 v Flamingo     (Home)

Match Result: Flamingo   202-8 , OB 258-3 won by 56 runs.

Notable performances and observations:
Dan Belcher (111*) came to the party at  last as he carried his bat through the innings. Nick Cooper(45*) batting at number 5 put together an unbeaten stand of 108.  Late resistance from the Flamingo batsmen saw their score reach 202 -8 at stumps. The off spin of Richie Willcock( 4-47) was the star with the ball.

Match 17 v Purbrook      (Away)

Match Result: Purbrook 113 all out, OB 334-1 won by 221 runs.

Notable performances and observations:
As is the normal in the last game of the season the two batsmen vying for the top dog batting position were allowed to open the innings. This year it was the Willcock boys who strode to the wicket, Nicky had a start of 38 runs on his brother.  45 overs later Nicky Willcock (220*) had taken the league batting trophy from his elder brother.  The lads put together a 1st wicket stand of 260 before Richie Willcock(83) fell just short of a well deserved century. Nick Cooper ( 5-29) ensured that the Purbrook reply was short and very sweet as their last 4 wickets fell for 3 runs. Another win for the Basing boys, the 11th in a row.

Highest wicket stands:

1st Wicket :  260   : Nicky Willcock and Richie Willcock   v Purbrook
2nd Wicket:    74   : Nicky Willcock and Andy Pope           v Purbrook

Saturday 1st XI End of Season Coaches Report

Also Titled “Nearly A Perfect Season, But Not Quite! ”

The magnificent *, Snow White and the * Dwarfs, * Up, Lucky *, and James Bond 00* Licenced to Kill.  Are all phrases that come to mind in respect of the number of extra points we needed in retrospect to have gained us promotion for the third consecutive season.

It does not seem that long ago that I penned the DFTM introduction to the new season ,  boy did the season fly past, it ended last Saturday at Purbrook in the same manner that it started back in early May when we took on ex high flyers Hungerford. The weather was fine and sunny and the results of both matches went Basing’s way.

But before I submit my end of season reports on the team as a whole and our individual combatants, I would like to thank all of the people involved in supporting the Saturday 1st XI during the 2009 season. Without them our lives during the summer would have been a bit more stressful.

The Umpire
Nigel Murgatroyd, many thanks for your ongoing support and weekly commitments as our very own Billy Bowden (more David Sheppard I hear you say!). Please remember to bring the mints next year on a more regular basis! Thankfully you did not have any Burridge  or was it Rowledge type incidents this year.

The Scorer
Heather Brown, many thanks for her long hours sitting in the cold whilst driving her coloured pencils until they were reduced to blunt sticks. Sorry about my two boys for making it very difficult for you with their rapid scoring.  Also I must congratulate Heather for her unending patience of having to put up with some very weird and not so wonderful characters which the opposition teams forced upon her as their scorers during the season.

The Tea Girl
Eve Hackett, who fed the Basing boys exceptionally well throughout the season.

The Assorted W.A.G’s (Including Mums washing comment only)
Many thanks to all of you for allowing your men and boys to play on most Saturdays during the season, attending coaching sessions on Thursday nights and in joining us in the bar after matches to celebrate our many victories and the odd defeat, washing our kit, massaging our aching muscles and giving loads of Tender Loving Care when we failed individually or collectively on the field of battle. Also for listening to our never ending stories of runs scored, wickets taken and catches caught throughout the season, which girls I would like to point out is only 4 months of the year , plenty of time for shopping trips and dirty weekends away during the close season!
Last but not least, I would like to thank the assorted W.A.Gs of our regular band of brothers being:
Sue H, Jules E, Becky B, Charlie C, Jess, Sarah C, Timmy C, Mrs Dev all of Dan’s numerous and colourful harem, and any young girls or older women that Daz T, Matt D and Greg D managed to persuade to be their squeeze for a while during the season.
I would like to give warm thanks to you all for adhering to the coach’s constant requests in such a brave and forth right way. As you resisted the constant calls of the flesh by slapping down your partner’s no doubt many amorous and drunken approaches on the eve of many an important match. (Yeh right)! Do I not believe that……? No such excuses now though during the long dark winter months eh? Any babies due to be born during the summer of 2010 will give the game away you know.

The Groundsman
Steve, for preparing a resplendent recreation ground for a majority of our home league matches and providing us with  a rapidly improving series of playing strips, on which our batsmen generally flourished, and our bowlers found responsive to their skills.

The Belchers:
Thanks go to Andy and Ali, for providing the Basing boys and their assorted W.A.Gs ample liquid refreshment pre and most importantly post match. Also, for filling all of our stomachs (some more than others) with a hot food selection that would grace any up market burger establishment in the land. Note to self 6 months of not eating a burger is required to enable me to hone my body for the indoor nets that will start in February.

The Players
Thanks for your general commitment and attitude throughout the season not only in the matches but also during the pre –match warm-ups’ and mid week training sessions. I would like to think that you also listened to the coach and that my mutterings and grumblings actually allowed you to improve your game and your tactical awareness. I hope that you do not think that a coach is only a mode of transport that players travelled to matches in.

The Committee
Thanks to you all for providing us all the players and coach with a wonderful venue and clubhouse, a general structure and financial platform to allow us all to play and enjoy this wonderful game that is Cricket.
